Artist’s statement
僕たちが初めて出会った時は９０年台後半だった。その時はまだミラノのヨーロッパデザイン学院の学生で、二人とも写真の授業を受けていた。その後、それぞれに違う道を進み、スタイルにあった方向性でキャリアを形成していった。その後15年以上経ち再び東京で出会ったのである。僕らはお互いのこれまでの経験を語り合った結果、双方とも現代的で混沌とした都市の風景に調和や平和がその環境の中にあると気づいた。その調和に我々が簡単に気づくことはない。しかし、一時スピードを緩め、周りを見渡してみると、実はそこにある。現在の日本に特によく見られる正反対のバランスを持ち、とりわけ「JAPANISM」と呼ばれている。
写真的な方法は異なるやり方でアプローチしている。一人はフィルムでより明るい中で撮影している。もう一人はデジタルでよりシャープに撮影している。
この全く異なるアプローチで、現代都市風景の中に「JAPANISM」を見出している。
We first met, in the late 90’s, while still students at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milano, the school where we both got a degree in photography. After that, we took different roads, building our careers and defining our styles and the way we approach photography. Now, after more than 15 years, we meet again in Tokyo. Talking about our experiences, we found out that we both observe the surrounding spaces looking for the harmony and peace in the modern, chaotic urban landscape. It is an unseen harmony that most of us simply don’t notice. But once you slow down and start to contemplate what’s around, there it is. It is a balance of opposites that seems to be particularly present in Japan therefore we like to call it “Japanism”. Photographically while both works are based on the form we approach it in two different ways, one is shot in film and based more on the light while the other, shot in digital, is more about shapes. Two distinct approaches, looking for the Japanism in the modern cityscape.
